Rig count shows 39 new oil rigs in Canada
HOUSTON _Natural gas and oil rig counts dropped for the second week in the United States while rig counts in Canada rose significantly for the second straight week.
The Baker Hughes rig count shows the total number of oil rigs in the US is down by one to 515 and the natural gas rig count declined by 13 and stands at 135. Last week there were 516 oil rigs and 148 gas rigs operational in the United States.
Texas was down by seven rigs while Louisiana registered five fewer rigs than during the previous week. Colorado, New Mexico, and North Dakota were all down by two rigs while Ohio and Wyoming were down one. The rig count in Alaska, Arkansas, Utah and West Virginia remained steady.
Oklahoma bucked the downward trend with four new rigs and California, Kansas and Pennsylvania all gained one rig.
This time last year, there were 1366 oil rigs and 310 gas rigs operational in the United States.
In Canada, there were 39 new oil rigs operational, bringing the Canadian rig count to 110 and with 22 gas rigs working, there were 117 gas rigs up and running.
A year ago, there were 234 oil rigs and 236 gas rigs operational in Canada.
The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981 and bottomed at 488 in 1999.
