One man is dead following an incident at the Suncor Energy’s Millennium oil sands mine on Friday morning.

According to Trent Bancarz, Alberta labour spokesman, the man in his 30’s died when the trench he was digging collapsed and buried him.  Sneh Setal of Suncor said the man died on the site.

“Early this morning, our personnel responded to an incident in a portion of the Millennium mine where the individual was working. Unfortunately this person was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Setal told CTV News.

The victim’s name has not been released.  CTV News reports the man worked for Calgary-based Aecon Mining.

All others working at the site have been accounted for and no one else was injured in the incident.

“We are extending our sincerest and deepest condolences to the person’s family, friends and co-workers,” said Setal.

RCMP along with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety are investigating.
