WASHINGTON _ A coalition of 25 states opposing President Obama’s plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is asking the Supreme Court to stop the new regulations from taking effect until after their legal challenge is resolved.
West Virginia and Texas are leading the group of largely Republican states that on Tuesday asked the high court to immediately bar the Environmental Protection Agency from enforcing the Clean Power Plan.
The move comes after an appeals court in Washington last week denied a similar request, handing a significant procedural victory to the Obama administration.
The federal plan aims to stave off the worst predicted impacts of climate change by reducing carbon dioxide emissions at existing power plants by about one-third by 2030. Courtroom arguments in the case are set to begin in June.
