Governor Abbott urges Texans to conserve electricity Thursday

Hot temperatures are stressing Texas electricity grid

Governor Greg Abbott is urging Texans to use electricity responsibly during peak hours – 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. – to combat the growing statewide demand for power.

For the first time since 2011, electricity usage in Texas has set a monthly record, and the state’s electric grid will face continued stress as seasonably hot weather conditions are expected to persist.

Adding to the stress on the electricity grid, several generation units have been forced out of service due to the persistent weather and high demands.

“I encourage all Texans to implement responsible energy practices,” Governor Abbott said. “In order to mitigate stress on our state’s electricity grid, Texans should take simple measures to save as much energy as possible.”

Consumers can help ensure the system is able to continue serving current power needs by taking the following steps to reduce demand on the system:

• Turn off all unnecessary lights and electronic equipment.
• Close blinds and drapes for windows that get direct sun.
• Try not to use the dishwasher, laundry equipment, hair dryers, coffeemakers, or other appliances during the peak hours of 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
• Avoid opening refrigerators or freezers unnecessarily.
• Use microwaves for cooking instead of an electric range or oven.
• Set your pool pump to run in the early morning or late evening.
