HOUSTON _ In an early release of the US rig count this week, oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. says the number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. dropped by 13 to 744.

On Wednesday, Baker Hughes said 55 rigs were seeking oil and 189 were exploring for natural gas, down significantly from 1,917 this time last year.

New Mexico gained two rigs while Oklahoma was up by one rig.  Texas was down by six rigs and the count in Alaska, California, Colorado, Louisiana, North Dakota, Pennsylvania and Wyoming all decreased by one rig.

Arkansas, Kansas, Ohio, Utah and West Virginia all registered no increases of decreases in their rig count.

In Canada, there was an increase of 14 oil rigs to 81 from 67 last week.  103 gas rigs were operational, up from 99 last week.

The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981 and bottomed at 488 in 1999.

The Baker Hughes rig count was released early because of the Thanksgiving holiday.
