US rig count down this week, up marginally in Canada

US rig count is down overall by 29 from last month to 809 for the week ending October 2.

Oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. says the number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the US is down this week, while there is a marginal uptick in the number of rigs in Canada.

In the US, the rig count is at 809 for the week ending October 2.  That number is down by 29 in September and down 1113 from October 2, 2014.

Baker Hughes says 614 rigs were searching for oil while 195 are exploring for natural gas.

In the major oil-and-gas producing states, Oklahoma lost eight rigs, Texas is down by six, Louisiana and New Mexico each lost four while Colorado and Pennsylvania are down by three.  Alaska is down by two rigs and California and North Dakota each lost one.

Utah and Wyoming were unchanged.

Gains of one rig were seen in Arkansas, Kansas, Ohio and West Virginia.

Meanwhile in Canada, the number of exploration rigs in Canada increased by three to 179.  That number is down 251 since this time last year.

Internationally, the rig count is up by 19 from August to 1137 and down 202 from August of 2014.
