US Energy Secretary Rick Perry talked coal exports, energy matters with Russian pranksters

One of the Russian pranksters known as the “Jerky Boys of Russia” duped US Energy Minister Rick Perry earlier this month, convincing the one-time presidential candidate that he was speaking with Ukraine’s Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman.

According to Reuters, during the 22-minute call, Perry discussed a number of topics including sanctions against Russia and helping Ukraine develop its oil and gas industries.

The Washington Examiner says Perry wanted more detailed information on Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s invention; a new biofuel made from a mixture of home-brewed alcohol and pig manure.

Rick Perry also told the faux PM that the Trump administration opposes a Russian project that would bring natural gas to Europe across the Baltic known as Nord Stream 2. Perry also said there was US technology that could help Ukraine develop its gas industry.

“Giving Ukraine more options with some of our technology is, I think, in everyone’s best interest with the exception of the Russians, but that’s OK,” he said.

Perry also got down to business with the prankster, offering comments on the Paris climate agreement as well as US coal exports.

The prank call comes about a month after Perry met with the Ukrainian President Poroshenko and his delegation at the Energy Department.

E&E news first reported the call, which is available online.

In the past, the Jerky Boys of Russia, Vladimir Krasnov and Alexei Stolyarov, have made fake calls to celebrities, even acting under the guise of Vladimir Putin in a conversation with Elton John.

“These individuals are known for pranking high-level officials and celebrities, particularly those who are supportive of an agenda that is not in line with their governments. In this case, the energy security of Ukraine,” Energy Department spokeswoman Shaylyn Hynes said in a written statement.

News of the Perry call came the same day the US House of Representatives voted to impose new sanctions on Russia.
