Mazda engine could prolong life of ICEs, improve hybrids

Mazda engine uses combustion ignition technology

Mazda’s SKYACTIV-X engine is 30 per cent more efficient than diesel engines and is being hailed as a major breakthrough in internal combustion engines (ICE).

The newly developed Mazda engine is fuelled by gasoline.  According to Reuters, it uses a spark plug to ignite a high-pressure “fireball” inside the chamber to compress the super-lean mix of fuel and air.

Mazda says it will deliver between 20 to 30 per cent more fuel economy than a standard engine.  It will also deliver up to 30 per cent more torque.

The Japanese automaker will launch the technology in its 2019 new models.

“Our resources are limited, so unlike bigger automakers, we don’t have the array of options in which to invest our R&D funds,” Mitsuo Hitomi, managing executive officer at Mazda told Reuters.

“That’s why we’re betting on this technology.

“We were determined that no matter what, we would develop this engine.”

The Mazda engine is a variant of homogeneous charge combustion ignition (HCCI) technology, and combines the benefits of both petrol and diesel engines and will improve power and efficiency.

The technology could also be used to enhance overall efficiency of gasoline hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

In the past, Mazda had outlined plans to cut CO2 emissions produced by its vehicles by 50 per cent of the levels produced in 2010 by 2030.  And by 2050, Mazda says it wants to increase this to 90 per cent.

Mazda is looking to reduce carbon emissions by using fuel efficient engines and believes it can achieve better CO2 reduction results than cars powered by fossil fuel-generated electricity.

According to Mazda, the new SKYACTIVE-X technology could also prolong the lifespan of combustion engines.

Mazda Motor Managing Executive Officer Mitsuo Hitomi says the cost of the new engine “falls somewhere between a gasoline and diesel engine”.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology Prof. William Green told Reuters “(the engine) has the advantage of being simple and straight forward, not expensive, and practical. Those are a lot of advantages.”

The Japanese automaker will debut its new engine at the Tokyo Motor Show 2017 which begins on Friday.
